Mahfud supported by migrant workers

I

ndonesian migrant workers based in Saudi Arabia said they would support the presidential bid of former Constitutional Court chief justice Mahfud MD.

Mahfud, who is in Saudi Arabia for a minor haj pilgrimage, said that a representative from the Indonesian community in the oil-rich kingdom had pledged the community’s support for him.

A spokesman for the Indonesian community, Ahmad Fuad, said that Indonesia needed a leader who was committed to upholding the law. “We see that Pak Mahfud has what it takes,” said Fuad, who is also chairman of the executive board of the Saudi Arabia chapter of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU).

Mahfud said he appreciated the support. Data from the National Agency for the Placement and Protection of Overseas Labor (BNP2TKI) said that 1.5 million Indonesians were working in Saudi Arabia.
