fficers from the Makassar Immigration Office are still questioning 82 migrants who were heading to Australia to seek asylum, after the group was arrested in the waters off Sinjai regency, South Sulawesi, on Tuesday.

Fifty one are Rohingya refugees from Myanmar, 24 are Iranians and seven others are from Somalia. Most of the migrants are families.

The migrants had hired a wooden boat from Takalar regency and were heading to East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) before going south to Australia.

The immigration office head of enforcement, Muhammad Bakri, said on Thursday that the migrants were intercepted by an Indonesian Navy (TNI AL) vessel patrolling the area. They were then handed over to the Sinjai Police who transferred them to the immigration office.

Initial questioning revealed only five of the migrants had passports.

The boat’s skipper, Syafaruddin, and three crew members were also detained and currently are being questioned at the South Sulawesi Water Police directorate in Makassar.
