leven people were feared dead after they were swept away by the Bengawan Solo River, which has flooded several areas in Central Java and East Java.

Five of the victims were residents of Ngawi, East Java while four other victims came from Bojonegoro, the other two victims were from Tuban and Gresik, all in the province.

'Floods are still inundating several regencies, including Blora, Bojonegoro, Gresik, Lamongan, Ngawi and Tuban, which cover 40 districts and hundreds of villages,' said head of the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) Sutopo Purwo Nugroho on Friday as quoted by tempo.co.

Currently, a total of 22,830 houses, 7,450 hectares of paddy fields as well as infrastructure facilities are inundated.

Bojonegoro regency in East Java is the worst hit area.

'In the regency, 11,942 houses, 11 kindergartens, 29 elementary schools, 6 mosques, 74 small mosques (mushala), 120,940 roads and 3,820 hectares of paddy fields are flooded,' said Sutopo, adding that 2,523 cows and 1,499 goats were evacuated due to the flooding.

Sutopo said man-made erosion in the river basin areas, which reached 3.14 millimeters per year meant the river flooded every year.(nai/ebf)
