Third-time wins in the same ring on the line

S

unday'€™s boxing match at Tennis Indoor Senayan will provide Chris John and Daud Yordan with third-time in a row success opportunities in the same ring.

Chris is seeking to defend his WBA super featherweight title for the 18th time while fellow Indonesian Daud will be defending his IBO featherweight belt for the second time.

They began their '€œcollaboration'€ show in Singapore last May, almost a year after they went against each other in a match that was won by Chris in Jakarta.

After they each had their own match against respective opponents, they appeared at Marina Bay Sands, Singapore, on May 5 last year, both ending their jobs triumphantly. Chris beat Japan'€™s Shoji Kimura for his 16th defense win while Daud succeeded in claiming the title for the first time with a KO win over Philippines'€™ Lorenzo Villanueva.

They returned to Singapore the following November, again successfully. Chris held off Thailand'€™s Chonlatarn Piriyapinyo for his 17th win and Daud over Choi Tseveenpurev to retain his title for the first time.

Satoshi Hosono will be Chris'€™ fifth Japanese opponent in the Indonesian'€™s bid for his 18th title. The list included Osamu Sato, Zaiki Takemoto, Hiroyuki Enoki and Kimura.

Undefeated Chris, who has won 48 out of his 50 fights, promised an entertaining match against Hosono.

'€œI want to entertain the Indonesian boxing community,'€ said Chris as quoted by Antara at the weigh-in ceremony held at the Sultan Hotel on Saturday.

He said he was optimistic about retaining the title once again.

'€œFeeling optimistic is a must and with hard work, all can be achieved,'€ he said.

His wife, Anna Maria Megawati, disclosed the boxer'€™s plan to participate in humanitarian efforts if he won the bout.

'€œThe plan is to get involved with humanitarian efforts. But I can'€™t disclose anything in detail just yet,'€ she said.

Chris underwent a one-month training regime in Perth under his Australian trainer Craig Christian before returning to Jakarta for further training.

For Hosono, it will be his third bid for the world championship after 2010 and 2011. In his last effort, Hosono was beaten by Celestino Caballero in the WBA featherweight title bout in Tokyo in December last year.

The WBA featherweight belt had belonged to Chris John until the Indonesian was crowned the super featherweight title for having defended the title more than 10 times.

Daud will defend his title for the second time against Simpiwe Vetyeka of South Africa.
