overnor Joko Widodo inaugurated on Tuesday 25 new members to the Jakarta Arts Council (DKJ) at City Hall.
The new members comprise four members on the literary committee, four on the music committee, four on the theater committee, five on the fine arts committee, four on the dance committee and four members on the film committee.
Speaking to reporters after the ceremony, the governor stressed his commitment to support the arts and cultural events in the capital.
“A city is different with arts [...] they enliven a city. We should not only think about [boosting] the economic sector,” he said, adding that the administration planned to hold various artistic and Betawi cultural events during Jakarta’s 486th anniversary in June.
Filmmaker Joko Anwar, a member of the film committee, said the members should get together to determine what was needed to develop artistic endeavors in Jakarta.
“We also need to establish an information system for both performers and the general public [...] detailing artistic and cultural events scheduled to be held in the capital,” he said, adding that it could also boost tourism.
Jakarta Tourism Agency head Arie Budhiman said around 2,800 artists lived in the capital.
