The antigraft body on Wednesday arrested and charged Bogor Legislative Council speaker Iyus Djuher with bribery following the arrest of seven men suspected of trying to bribe him in return for a land certificate.

Iyus, a Democratic Party politician, was named a suspect along with four others after he was arrested at his house in Ciomas, Bogor, during a two day operation, said KPK spokesperson Johan Budi.

'€œHe could be charged with articles 12 a or b or Article 5 Item 2 or Article 11 of Law No. 31/1999 on corruption,'€ he told a press conference in Kuningan, South Jakarta.

The case centered on the allegation that Sentot Susilo, director of trading company PT Gerindo Perkasa, attempted to bribe Iyus through Usep Jumeno and Listo Wely Sabu, both members of staff at Bogor administration, to secure a certificate for a 100 hectare plot of land in Antajaya village, Tanjung Sari district, Bogor.

The company reportedly planned to construct a luxurious cemetery on the land.

Prior to the arrest, the KPK received information that Sentot would withdraw a large sum of money from a bank in Sentul, Bogor, on Tuesday. The KPK investigators then followed Sentot after he withdrew Rp 1 billion (US$102,987) from the bank around 11 a.m.

Sentot and Nana Supriatna then went to the rest area in Sentul to meet with Usep who was accompanied by Willy.

Sentot, Nana and Usep then went for lunch together around 3 p.m. After that, Sentot and Nana went to their car and Usep followed. Usep then exited the car carrying a large bag that was revealed to be filled with Rp 800 million. '€œAround 5 p.m. Sentot and Nana gave the bribe money to Usep,'€ Johan said.

According to a source within the KPK, Iyus was supposed to receive Rp 500 million while the other
Rp 300 million was to be distributed among the middlemen.

Iyus is the latest Democratic Party politician to be charged with corruption by the KPK. The party is seeing its popularity dive because of the graft scandals involving many of its members.

In February, the party required its officials to sign an integrity pact in an attempt to mend its image. The integrity pact stipulated that party members who were involved in a corruption case must resign from the party.

Democratic Party executive chairman Syarifuddin Hassan said that Iyus'€™ name would be removed from the party'€™s provisional list of legislative candidates.

Besides Iyus, the KPK also named Usep, Wely, Nana and Sentot suspects in the case.

KPK investigators also raided the offices of Iyus and Bogor Regent Rachmat Yasin on Tuesday. When asked about Rachmat'€™s possible involvement in the case, KPK commissioner Bambang Widjojanto said that the investigators had raided the places of people suspected to be involved in the case.

'€œSuch as the one who issued the land permit,'€ he said.

Usep is currently employed at Bogor Education Agency and used to work at Bogor Regional Development Planning Agency (BPPD) and Bogor Spatial Planning and Land Agency, said Bogor Deputy Regent Karyawan Fathurachman.

Commenting on the status of the land, Karyawan, whose office was also raided by the KPK, said that the lot could be used for a cemetery.

Besides confiscating the alleged bribe money, the KPK also seized the two cars used by Sentot and Usep.

This latest bribery bust occurred a week after KPK investigators arrested Pargono Riyadi, a taxman, for allegedly trying to extort Rp 125 million from Asep Hendro, owner of motocross spare parts and accessories manufacturer Asep Hendro Racing Sports (AHRS), last Tuesday.
