he Public Works Ministry's directorate general of Bina Marga in cooperation with the South Sumatra provincial administration's public works agency, will start building a flyover and underpass this year.
The underpass will connect Simpang Patal and Pusri while the flyover will carry traffic between Simpang Jakabaring and Ampera. Jointly funded by the state and regional budget, the project will cost Rp 230 billion (US$23.68 million).
State-run construction company PT Wijaya Karya's project manager, Joko Saputro, said the flyover would be 1,830 meters long and 433 meters wide while the underpass would be 1,050 meters and 600 meters wide. He said the land clearing process was conducted in 2012.
Speaking separately, a transportation expert from University of Sriwijaya, Erika Buchori, regretted the government's decision to prioritize the underpass and flyover.
Erika said expanding and strengthening alternative routes across Palembang city and reviving river transportation might help resolve traffic problems.(ebf)
