P

olice are investigating a bomb scare at the University of Indonesia (UI) campus in Depok, West Java, over the weekend that reportedly turned out to be a student prank.

Beji police precinct commander Comr. Agus Widodo said that detectives would summon the mathematics and science Department (BEM FMIPA) students to find out who placed a cardboard box with a printer inside in the back seat of the car belonging to Nail Renardi, 20, on Friday.

"We want to know the motivation behind it all and why the bystanders sang 'Happy Birthday' after the bomb squad opened the box and found a printer inside," Agus said late on Friday.

The police said Nail reported the box to campus security guards after he saw that it did not belong to him.

"We came with metal detector that went off when placed next to the box," campus security chief Namin said. The box is the factory package for printer of HP brand.

The police and bomb squad were called, scanning the box before opening it with a knife and showing its contents to the students and media who assembled nearby. The hundreds of students immediately sang "Happy Birthday" while laughing.

"If the students pulled a prank on the police and the bomb squad, they have to be responsible and there is law regulating on it," Agus said.
