T

he Jakarta Police said on Monday that state prosecutors had returned Hercules Rozario Marshal’s dossier for more supporting evidence.

“The prosecutors returned Hercules’ file last Friday. They demanded a deeper investigation into the case. They also appealed to the police to submit more of the evidence that the police had seized at the scene,” Jakarta Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Rikwanto said.

He added that the prosecutors also demanded that more witnesses, including the officers who arrested Hercules, be questioned.

Hercules, who is still in police custody, and 49 of his associates were named suspects on March 9 for their alleged involvement in a fight with police in Kebon Jeruk Indah, West Jakarta, the previous day. The clash broke out when the suspects allegedly tried to provoke a fight with police guarding the area after reports that Hercules and his men were shaking down local residents.

Those arrested face multiple charges under Articles 160, 170 and 214 of the Criminal Code for incitement, violence and resisting arrest, carrying maximum sentences of 18 years’ imprisonment. Meanwhile, Hercules is facing an additional charge for the illegal possession of a firearm, breaching the 1951 Emergency Law, which carries a maximum penalty of death or 20 years in prison.
