he Jakarta High Court upheld the verdict of the Jakarta Corruption Court on businesswoman Siti Hartati Murdaya, who was convicted of graft and sentenced to 32 months in prison in February.
The high court issued the ruling on April 24 after a panel of judges examining appeals filed by both Murdaya and the prosecutors found that neither party had provided new evidence to overturn the lower court’s verdict.
“The arguments are just a repeat of what was presented in the lower court,” the court’s spokesman, Ahmad Sobari, who led the panel of judges handling the case, said as quoted by kompas.com.
Hartati was found guilty of paying Rp 3 billion (US$305,000) in bribes to Amran Batalipu, the former regent of Buol in Central Sulawesi, in order to expedite the issuance of a business permit she needed for her oil palm plantation company, PT Hartati Inti Plantation. The court also sentenced Hartati to pay a fine of Rp 150 million.
