en Rohingya refugees detained at the Aceh Social Agency training center (BLK) attempted to escape from temporary detention on Wednesday. Officers at the Aceh Immigration Office managed to recapture the escapees only a few hours later.

Noviezaldi Syafril, monitoring and permit division head at the Aceh Immigration Office, said the refugees fled by climbing over the fence at around 3 a.m.

Residents living nearby reportedly saw the refugees outside the detention center. “The escapees have been transferred to the detention center at the Immigration Office in Banda Aceh for further investigation. They will be in the center until we send them to Tanjung Pinang next week,” said Noviezaldi.

The 10 Rohingya refugees were part of the 74 refugees fleeing from Myanmar, who were previously left stranded on a beach on Aceh Island, situated to the north of Banda Aceh, on April 7.
