roven to have smuggled 287 grams of hashish from Bangkok into Bali, German national Martin Robert Moller, 42, was sentenced to five years imprisonment. The defendant is also required to pay a fine of Rp 1 billion (US$102,500) or face an additional three months in prison.
The verdict was made by the panel of judges led by Judge Sugeng Riyono at the Denpasar District Court on Wednesday and was lighter than that requested by Public Attorney I Putu Gede Astawa, who had requested 5.5 years imprisonment and a fine of Rp 1 billion or additional six months in prison.
“The defendant is proven to have violated article 113 (1) of law No. 35/2009 on narcotics,” said Sugeng. The law stipulates that imprisonment of five years is the minimum sentence, while the maximum is 15 years.
The man was nabbed on Dec. 14, 2012, as his flight, Thai Airways TG 431, landed from Bangkok. Officers discovered 22 pills of hashish weighing 287 grams in Moller’s stomach. The hashish was valued at Rp 172 million.
Moller, accompanied by his lawyer, Pande Putu Arsanti, accepted the conviction without any protest.
