risoners helped guards of Permisan Penitentiary on Nusakambangan Island, Central Java, extinguish the fire that engulfed part of the prison on Saturday morning.
'Thank God the fire was extinguished by the wardens with the help of the prisoners,' said Suwarso, the head of the penitentiary division at Central Java regional office Law and Human Rights Ministry.
Suwarso said that there were no prisoners who utilized the commotion to escape during the incident. 'They were even on hand to put out the fire,' he said.
According to Suwarso, the fire, which was believed to come from an electrical short circuit, burnt the prison offices, which are located in the middle of the complex. Thus the convicts could still live like usual.
'The cells are okay, so is the kitchen. There are no victims in this accident,' said Suwarso, adding that he just waited for the arrival of officers from state electricity company PT PLN to turn the electricity back on.
Permisan Penitentiary, which accommodates up to 300 prisoners, is one of seven prisons located on Nusakambangan Island. (nai)
