four-year-old Sumatran tiger will be released back into its natural habitat after being accidentally trapped by residents in Bonjol district, Dharmasraya regency, West Sumatra.
The tiger, measuring more than 1 meter long, had been sent for treatment at the Satwa Kandi Park in Sawahlunto.
Dharmasraya regent Adi Gunawan said that farmers found the tiger in a trap set for wild boars on Tuesday. The tiger was saved by forest rangers.
'Its right foot was wounded and swollen, while its teeth were bleeding probably from biting the chain of the trap,' Adi said on Friday.
Adi said his office planned to work with the PT Tidar Kerinci Agung animal rehabilitation center to rerelease the tiger. Six months ago PT Tidar Kerinci Agung provided a forested area measuring 2,400 hectares for the wildlife rehabilitation center.
Adi urged residents to no longer set traps that could entrap protected animals.
