ndonesia has won three gold and two silver medals at the 2013 International Exhibition of Young Inventors (IEYI), which took place in the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, Malaysia, on May 9 to 11.
Participants from 13 countries, including Indonesia, attended the 2013 IEYI that was hosted by the Malaysian Invention and Design Society (MINDS).
'In this year's competition, Indonesia has won several awards that have made us proud,' said the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) head of science and technology dissemination and cooperation bureau Bogie Soedjatmiko Eko Tjahjono, on Sunday.
The 'rotten eggs detector' created by Wisnu, a student from SMA Taruna Nusantara in Magelang, Central Java, won the gold medal in the food and agriculture category while a student from state junior high school SMP Negeri 1 in Bogor, West Java, Hibar Syahrul Gafur, won a gold medal in the health and safety category through his 'anti-sexual assault shoes' invention.
Gold in the green technology category went to three students from state senior high school SMA Negeri 6 Yogyakarta ' Elizabeth Widya Nidianita, Nurina Zahra Rahmati and Tri Ayu Lestari ' who invented the 'turbine-under-shot waste filter'.
'In the 2013 IEYI, there were a total of six categories ' including disaster management, education and recreation, and technology for special needs in which the participants competed,' said the LIPI's head of public relations Nur Tri Aries Suestiningtyas, during the arrival of the Indonesian delegation at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport at noon on Sunday.
State-senior high school SMA Negeri 6 Yogyakarta student Devika Asmi Pandanwangi won a silver medal in the technology for special needs category, with her invention, the 'breast milk container-equipped bra'.
Another medal came from Safira Dwi Tyas Putri of the Sampoerna Academy Campus in Bogor, West Java, whose invention, entitled the 'automatic-batik canting' (a small dipper used to apply wax in the batik process), won a silver medal in the green technology category).
The IEYI is an annual international competition that showcases a wide variety of inventions from young scientists. (ebf)
