he Jakarta Police say they will crack down on gang crime by increasing their patrols of areas where young people gather on motorcycles for street races.
"The police will conduct intensive patrols and operations throughout the city, especially at places like Jl. Asia Afrika and Jl. Benyamin Sueb, both in Central Jakarta, and in Taman Mini in East Jakarta, where young people usually street race," Jakarta Police spokesperson Sr. Comr. Rikwanto told reporters on Monday.
On Sunday, a Kompas TV journalist was assaulted by three men on motorbikes who were reportedly members of a gang.
The victim, Harko Setiono, 24, had just finished covering a story when he drove past the men on his motorcycle near BMW Park in Pademangan, North Jakarta. The men pursued and assaulted him, Rikwanto said.
The spokesman said that many young motorcyclists committed crimes during street races.
"During a street race or street show, they usually get offended when
other street users pass among the crowd in the street. Finally, they end up assaulting them like the case of Kompas TV journalist [on Sunday]," Rikwanto said.
