Like millions of others, Leonardo DiCaprio loved "The Great Gatsby" as a teenager.
But he says he only recently began to understand it.
The star of Baz Luhrmann's lush screen adaptation says that when he re-read F. Scott Fitzgerald's book as an adult, he felt that it was not the tale of tragic romance he once believed.
DiCaprio said Wednesday at the Cannes Film Festival that the book is the story of a man who "was trying to become a great Rockefeller, a great American, and somewhere along the way has lost a sense of who he was."
"Gatsby" is opening the 12-day film extravaganza Wednesday.
DiCaprio and co-stars Tobey Maguire and Carey Mulligan will walk the Cannes red carpet later, bringing the festival its first dose of Hollywood glamor.
