Former vice president Jusuf Kalla said that the Indonesian Military (TNI) must be well-equipped to enable it to deal with numerous challenges.
Kalla said that in the country's history, there were two periods when the Indonesian military had great military posture, the first being in the 1960s offensive campaign under the Dwikora and Trikora operations and then during the 1980s.
Your comments:
Kalla claims that the 1980s were glorious days for the Indonesian military. What were the real activities of the Indonesian military in the 80s?
Actually, in the 80s, the Indonesian military developed lots of
alleged illegal businesses throughout the country, especially in Aceh, Timor Leste and West Papua which were then declared 'military operation areas'.
The 80s saw the wave of 'Petrus' killings in Java, a series of thousands of extrajudicial executions.
However, the old glorious days are still alive in West Papua, which still has a military operation area and where the Indonesian army is still very active.
