overnor Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo expressed his relief over the latest development of the much-anticipated monorail project, saying that the project only needed to complete one more administrative step.
He gave the project's developer, PT Jakarta Monorail (JM), a week to complete the last document.
'We are now only one step away,' he said in front of thousands of people who attended his general lecture session at Tarumanagara University in West Jakarta on Thursday.
The governor was referring to the financial closing document related to the data from Singapore-based Ortus Group, which controlled 90 percent of the project consortium. Earlier this year, JM engaged with Ortus Group in exchange for US$300 million in capital.
JM previously completed the document related to the payment of the monorail's support pillars to state-owned construction firm PT Adhi Karya and handed it to the city administration.
The two parties settled their debt dispute in March as JM agreed to buy Adhi Karya's entire share for Rp 190 billion to acquire support pillars built by Adhi Karya when it held 7.5 percent of JM shares.
JM spokesman Bovananto said the document had made progress toward completion. Ortus and the city recently met to discuss pending matters.
Ortus Group business development director Banyu B. Djarot was upbeat that his company could convince the city of its financial capability and said that the company would immediately complete the document as requested by the governor.
Jokowi has set a deadline for the monorail to operate in 2016. In the meantime, a monorail prototype will be placed at the National Monument (Monas) in Central Jakarta.
'The prototype can teach the public about how to travel by monorail,' he said.
The monorail project initially started in 2004 but was stopped in March 2008 by JM due to legal and financial problems.
The consortium is proposing to build two lines: The green line, with 16 stations, will extend 14.27 kilometers from Komdak (the city police headquarters) to Satria Mandala Museum, both in South Jakarta; and the blue line will stretch 9.72 km from Kampung Melayu in East Jakarta to Roxy in West Jakarta, with 11 stations.
