ocal prosecutors have backed down after an armed mob of 500 showed up to thwart the court-ordered confiscation of a 74-hectare plot from real estate company PT Summarecon.
The Supreme Court previously upheld the Tangerang District Court's decision affirming the rights of the Tan Hok Tjio family to the land, on which a golf course, a housing complex, and a cathedral have been built..
Witnesses said that PT Summarecon security guards and the mob, reportedly comprised of members of mass organizations armed with sharp sticks, machetes and stones, blocked prosecutors and court officials from entering the site.
Romo Sudar, representing the Tan Hok Tjio family, called on the firm to comply with the court order. 'We don't understand why PT Summarecon still holds control over the land as of today.'
The court determined that the family's title to the land was genuine and dated to 1940. It is unclear how PT Summarecon acquired and developed the plot.
