he Dumai Customs and Excise Office in Riau foiled an attempt to smuggle 34 tons of shallots and garlic from Malaysia, the office enforcement chief, MC Sarmento, said in a press statement on Thursday.

He said the food items were seized from the KM Bulan Purnama II, which was about to drop anchor in Sungai Kemeli, Dumai, on Wednesday.

"In addition to impounding the cargo, we also detained the skippers and three shipmates," he said in the statement.

"The amount of 34 tons is based on the manifest although there is a possibility that the ship was carrying more than that. We will recheck the actual cargo."

He said shallots and garlic were prohibited from import through Dumai as per a trade and agriculture ministerial regulation in 2012.
