egional Commission on Children Monitoring and Protection (KPPAD) in Riau Islands says violence against children in the province continues to increase and most the cases are sexual.
KPPAD commissioner Erry Syahrial said on Sunday that the commission dealt with 152 cases of violence against children in 2012, up from 110 the previous year.
'The biggest number was of sexual violence against children in which most perpetrators are close acquaintances of the children they target,' said Erry.
Out of 110 cases of violence against children in 2011, 75 were sexual and in 2012, the number grew to 93 of total 152 cases reported.
The increased trend of violence against children seems to be associated with poor parenting and a lack of safe playgrounds. Most parents in the province are working parents.
Already this year, 69 cases of violence against children, mostly sexual, have been reported to the commission. (asw/ebf)
