est Tanjungjabung administration in Jambi province is providing Rp 400 million (US$40,996) worth of funds to combat HIV/AIDS in 2013 due to the large number of cases reported in the regency this year.
'All of the HIV/AIDS control funds come from the West Tanjungjabung regional budget because there has been no financial assistance provided by the central government for that purpose this year,' said the administration's health agency chief Ahmad Putra on Saturday.
West Tanjungjabung received a budget allocation of Rp 150 million to fight HIV/AIDS in 2012.
'A region cannot constantly receive HIV/AIDS control funds from the central government. This year, it is Bungo regency's turn to receive the budget allocation,' said Ahmad.
As of March, West Tanjungjabung recorded 66 HIV/AIDS cases, placing it as the second highest region in the province with HIV/AIDS cases, following Jambi City.
Many of those infected are of reproductive age between 23 and 45-years-old. Most of the infections were transmitted through risky sexual behavior and none were caused by injecting drugs.
'We now have a regional AIDS commission [KPA], so more HIV/AIDS cases can be recorded,' Ahmad told The Jakarta Post.(nai/ebf)
