President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono is praising Chatib Basri, his new finance minister, as an economist with extensive experience.
Under the one year that Chatib led the Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM), investments in Indonesia grew significantly and contributed to the economic growth, he said.
'When we and several other countries experienced declining exports, investments have become the main sources of Indonesia's economic growth, which has been continuously preserved and still stands at a relatively high rate in the midst of ongoing global crisis,' Yudhoyono told a press conference at the Presidential Office on Monday as quoted by Kompas.com.
'Concerning his extensive education backgrounds, assignments, experiences, and dedication, I considered Chatib Basri capable and able to perform his tasks as finance minister,' Yudhoyono.
Before serving as BKPM chairman, Chatib was deputy chairman of the National Commission on Economics (KEN). He will be sworn in as finance minister on Tuesday. (fan/ebf)
