married couple claim their son was a victim of medical malpractice at the Baiturrahim Hospital in Jambi and have decided to take legal action.

Rahmat and Nurmalisa, local residents of Kasang Jaya, East Jambi district, Jambi City, said they planned to file a lawsuit against the hospital after their son, Nazril, who is only 40 days, suffered eye swelling allegedly caused by wrongly-prescribed medicine.

Nazril's uncle Edi Hamdani told journalists on behalf of the family that the incident began on April 19, when his nephew was taken to Baiturrahim Hospital.

A doctor at the hospital, identified only by initial I, prescribed him tarivid ofloxacin to be used as eye-drops. The eye drops should be used twice a day.

"But after five days of usage, Nazril's swollen eyes got bigger. He also had a kind of sand discharge seeping from his eyes,' said Edi on Sunday.

Nazril's parents took the baby to another physician who told them to stop using tarivid ofloxacin.

'Without any explanation, the physician asked us to throw away the medicine and prescribed a new drug. It was really shocking when a pharmacist told us that tarivid ofloxacin is ear-drops, not for eyes,' said Edi.

'We will take legal action against the hospital for prescribing ear drops,' said Edi, adding they had appointed a lawyer. (fan/ebf)
