Jakarta's top cop is telling nightclubs that officers will increase security at nightclubs in the run-up to the start of Ramadhan, the Muslim fasting month, in July.
City police chief Insp. Gen. Putut Eko Bayuseno told a meeting of nightclub owners that officers would follow up every lead to prevent drug deals and drug use as Ramadhan approached.
"We will order all of our personnel to remain cautious on the eve of the Ramadhan fasting month. Nightlife entertainment is a necessity, but they have to be well maintained," Putut said.
In a thinly-veiled reference to the hard-line Muslim vigilante groups that have previously launched their own "crackdowns", Putut told the nightclub owners to work with police to prevent "public anger" during Ramadhan that might undermine the security condition in the capital.
The chairman of the Jakarta Entertainment Establishment Owners Association, Adrian Mailite claimed that the association's members would "enhance coordination" with the police to stop the drug trade.
However, Adrian cautioned police to be prudent.
"We agree that drugs are the people's enemy. But many people visit our places and not all of them are using drugs," Adrian said. "Some may be deterred from coming again if police keep being like this."
