A report shows that European Union (EU) and its member states provided more than '¬300 million (Rp 37.8 trillion) in development assistance to Indonesia in 2012.

The report, Blue Book 2013, emphasizes the changing nature of development cooperation due to Indonesia's great success in reducing poverty, partly supported by strong economic growth and improved democratic processes.

EU Ambassador to Indonesia, Brunei Darussalam and ASEAN, Julian Wilson, said Indonesia was today an emerging economic and commercial power with sustained annual growth, which was expected to exceed 6 percent.

'Together with Indonesia, we aim to build a modern, outward-looking cooperation that is built on the principle of equal partnership and dialogue in areas such as climate change, transnational crime, global governance and regional security,' he said on Tuesday.

The EU support was disbursed in several areas of development, including education, economic cooperation and trade and investment, as well as environment and climate change.

The EU adopted a new development cooperation policy, the Agenda for Change, in 2012 to ensure the effective use of development assistance. The new agenda, which will commence next year, sets out how the EU will focus its aid to help where it is most needed. (ebf)
