Deputy Governor Basuki 'Ahok' Tjahaja Purnama's family still carries the scars of the May 1998 riots.
Ahok himself watched the burning of Karawaci Supermall when his family had to move from Karawaci in Tangerang to Pluit in North Jakarta around May 13. There were burning tires everywhere.

Thank you for sharing. You are a brave and good man. I completely agree. A Chinese living anywhere has to be good because that's what being a human about, not out of fear or flattery.

The sad and disturbing aspect of this is that Indonesians were and are capable of doing such atrocious deeds. The people have not grown up to leave behind such a brutal streak.
They did it in 1965, and again in 1998. There are also Ambon, Makassar, and many other recent flare ups that turn just as brutal.
It is foremost the responsibility of spiritual leaders to bring this nation forward toward peace and prosperity, instead of exploiting people's discontent to promote their own interests. We cannot have a repeat of 1965.
