An officer with the Jakarta Police shot himself in the head at his home in Pulo Gadung, East Jakarta, on Friday, allegedly due to stress.

The officer, of brigadier rank and identified only as JM, 31, was a detective at the police's crime and violence unit.

Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Rikwanto explained that JM worked overtime on Thursday until Friday morning and went home at around 10 a.m. He quoted the deceased's wife as saying that he immediately locked himself in his room.

"He refused to open up, even for his wife," Rikwanto said on Friday.

Rikwanto said that JM's wife then left to pick up her child from school while her husband remained locked inside. She later asked her in-laws, who lived nearby, to help her force open the door.

"They opened the door with a crowbar. JM was found already dead with bloodstains on his head and a gun next to him," Rikwanto said.

Police are still investigating the case. Rikwanto added that JM was one of the best investigators in the force.
