Despite delays in the national senior high school exams in 11 out of the country's 34 provinces, almost 100 percent of high school students passed, according to the Education and Culture Ministry.
The ministry announced on Thursday that 99.48 percent of senior high school and Islamic high school students and 99.95 percent of vocational high school students succeeded in their exams.
Education and Culture Minister Mohammad Nuh said the percentage of the total senior high school students who passed the exams was only a slight decrease from 99.5 percent.
'This means the problems in the preparation of this year's national exams did not impede the implementation of the exams, or students' graduation,' he said.
The exams were taken by 1,581,286 senior high school and Islamic high school students; and 1,106,140 students from vocational high schools. Only 8,250 senior or Islamic high school students failed the exams, while the number of vocational high school students who failed was 601.
Data from the ministry shows that Aceh had the highest percentage of students who failed the exam with 3.11 percent of students failing, followed by Papua at 2.85 percent and Southeast Sulawesi at 2.32 percent.

According to the education and culture minister, 99.48 percent of senior high school and Islamic high school students and 99.95 percent of vocational high school students passed their exams. Is this report really true or is it a cover-up of a debacle that will spawn even more debacles and even tragedies?
Knowing Nuh and his already tarnished reputation, the validity of these exam results should be cast in doubt.
If the real achievements of the students were deliberately 'altered positively' by the Education and Culture Ministry then the following horrendous scenario might happen in the coming months: joyful students who have been declared 'passed' will enter the universities and colleges of their choice, and their hopeful parents will spend enormous sums to further the education of their offspring.

Some 99 percent of students have passed the examinations. In Holland and other countries, about 85-90 percent pass. Schools must be so good in Indonesia and students must be so brilliant! Congratulations!

Nowhere in this world have 99 percent of students passed a national test. Shame on this educational system to make the public believe that only 1 percent did not pass.
