he Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) on Tuesday advised airlines to be cautious when passing over North Sumatra, especially in mountainous regions due to dense fog.
The BMKG announced that visibility had reached 3 kilometers in Medan and surrounding areas compared to 5 km during normal conditions.
BMKG Medan office data division head Hendra Suwarta said that based on radar surveillance, the thick fog covering Medan and its surrounding areas was due to cloud formation.
“ Morning cloud formation is what caused the clouds to become so thick,” Hendra told The Jakarta Post on Tuesday.
He said fog covering the province, especially in Medan and Deli Serdang regency, had yet to disrupt flights.
He added that forest fires might have contributed to the lower than usual visibility. At least 11 hotspots were monitored by radars across North Sumatra especially in South Tapanuli and Labuhan Batu regencies.
