Illegal cosmetics, drugs and food destroyed in Banjarmasin

he Banjarmasin Food and Drugs Office (BB-POM) destroyed 33,546 items of illegal cosmetics, drugs and food taken from market operations during 2010-2012, on Wednesday.

A statement made available to The Jakarta Post on Wednesday said that the Rp 253.44 million (US$25,882) worth of illegal products destroyed included 20,324 items of cosmetics covering 615 different types and 2,031 items of food that comprised 27 types. Other products were 6.044 items of drugs that covered 385 types and 5,147 items of traditional medicine comprising 172 different types.

'€œIt is the eleventh crushing of illegal products we have conducted during 2013,'€ the agency said.

Food and drugs agencies in 10 other cities '€“ Bandar Lampung, Batam, Jakarta, Jayapura, Medan, Palangkaraya, Palembang, Pekanbaru, Semarang and Serang '€“ have previously crushed illegal products worth Rp 11 billion, taken after market surveillance in their respective areas.

The BB-POM Banjarmasin data from 2010-2012 revealed that cosmetics tainted with hazardous substances and traditional herbal medicine that contained chemicals made up the biggest proportion of illegal products confiscated from the markets. (hrl/ebf)
