Illegal migrants stranded in Cilacap

A

s many as 101 alleged illegal immigrants from Iraq, Iran and Afghanistan '€” reportedly en route to Christmas Island, Australia '€” were rescued from the waters of Karangduwur in Kebumen regency, Central Java, on Friday morning.

Of the 101 migrants, 20 were children below the age of 10. They are all being held at the Immigration Office in Cilacap, Central Java.

'€œWe are still identifying them. [We are struggling with] the language barrier,'€ coordinator of the Cilacap branch of the National Search and Rescue Agency, Trijoko Priyono, said when he was contacted on Friday.

He said a 27-meter-long wooden vessel had been spotted by locals on Thursday morning but due to high tides the Search and Rescue team was only able to evacuate the ship at 5:30 a.m. on Friday.

'€œIt was initially seen in Cilacap'€™s waters but on Thursday evening it had moved to Kebumen regency,'€ Trijoko said.

The ship is an Indonesian vessel.
