wo warring sides at odds over the plan to create more districts and villages in Nduga regency, Papua, have agreed to stop.
“Leaders of both groups have agreed to make peace. The consequences will be settled through customary channels,” Papua Governor Lukas Enembe said on Friday. “The customary peace process is being discussed and we are waiting for the schedule.”
A meeting between the groups, led by Nduga Regent Yairus Gwijangge — which support the plan to create more districts and villages — and those led by Nduga Legislative Council speaker, Anthi Gwijangge — which reject the plan — was held at the Gedung Negara building in Jayapura on Thursday at 8 p.m. local time (6 p.m. Jakarta time).
The governor said the plan to increase the number of districts from eight to 32; and villages from 32 to 211 villages was canceled. It was also agreed the regency would only have two electoral districts.
Previously, Enembe had threatened to dissolve Nduga and return it to Jayawijaya regency if the leaders failed to agree on a peace pact. He said that a new regency had been created for the sake of the people’s welfare.
