t least three people have died following a pileup involving six vehicles at the 87.4 kilometer point of the Cikampek-Purwakarta-Padalarang (Cipularang) toll road, on the Jakarta-bound lane, at 3:30 a.m. on Monday.

West Java Police spokesman Sr.Comr.Martinus Sitompul said the crash involved two buses ' Symponi and Medal Sekarwangi ' and four cars.

'The three people who died were the driver and two passengers in a Toyota Avanza. Their bodies have been taken to Etaham Hospital in Purwakarta,' he said via a text message on Monday.

Martinus said the accident occurred when the driver of the Symponi bus, which was traveling to Jakarta, lost control on a downward stretch of the road and hit the Toyota Avanza that was in front of it.

The initial crash then created a chain reaction involving three other cars and a second bus, he said.

One of the other car's drivers, Joko Purwanto, 38, from Sragen, Central Java, and his passenger, Hanung, 31, from Sambung Macan district in Sragen, suffered only minor injuries.

'They were taken to Thamrin Hospital in Purwakarta,' said Martinus, adding that the accident had caused an estimated Rp 75 million (US$7,645) worth in losses. (ebf)
