The West Jakarta District Court has sentenced Muhammad Thoriq to seven years imprisonment for his involvement in terrorism.

"The defendant is guilty of committing terrorist acts for which he is sentenced to seven years in prison," chief judge Yufery, who presided over the panel of judges in the case, said in a court session on Monday.

Prosecutors had sought an eight-year sentence for Thoriq for violating Chapter 9 of the 2003 Terrorism Law.

Yufery said the defendant got a lighter sentence because of his lack of previous convictions and his good behavior during the trial.

Asked his response, Thoriq, clad in a yellow prison uniform, said he did not object to the court verdict and would not appeal to a higher court.

Thoriq was a member of the Depok and Solo terror cells. He was arrested for possession of explosives at his rented house in Tambora, West Jakarta. The explosives were to be used to bomb targets in the city.

He surrendered to the police on Sept. 9, 2012 after he was declared a terror suspect following the discovery of the explosives and the arrest of his fellow cell members in Solo and Depok. He later admitted that he was involved in the making of a bomb that exploded in Beji, Depok, on Sept. 8, and had prepared himself to become a suicide bomber in the city on Sept. 10.
