he Batam administration says that it will build a botanical garden on an 85-hectare plot of land located in Nongsa subdistrict near the Hang Nadim airport.
The initiative is a follow up from the agreement signed by the administration, the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI), the Public Works Ministry and the Batam Free Trade Zone Management Agency in mid 2012.
'It will be 2 hectares smaller than the Bogor Botanical Garden. There have been 293 collections of plants, most of them wild,' Batam administration spokesman Ardinata said.
He said that the botanical garden will be used for the preservation of coastal plants in the region, to prevent them from fading out due housing and population growths in Batam.
'The Public Works Ministry has provided Rp 2 billion (US$ 202286) initial budget for the plan. The total budget we need is Rp 850 billion,' Ardinata said.
According to the LIPI, Indonesia should have at least 47 botanical gardens for research and education purposes. Currently, there are 32 botanical gardens under construction. (hrl/dic)
