tate-owned regional carrier Merpati Nusantara Airlines (MNA) opens a new route serving Denpasar in Bali and Labuan Bajo in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) to give domestic and foreign tourists wider transportation access ahead of the Sail Komodo 2013 in August.

'€œWe open the route to make sure that a flight route for all tourists who want to go to Labuan Bajo is available,'€ said the airline'€™s Kupang district manager, Srianto Senoadi, on Monday, as quoted by Antara news agency.

Having served flights to areas in NTT, he said Merpati shared responsibility with the government and other communities to make the Sail Komodo, which would be culminated in Labuan Bajo, in September, successful.

'€œOne of the ways to make the event successful is by opening the direct flight route of Denpasar-Labuan Bajo for all tourists that want to visit the Komodo national park and see the natural beauty of the area,'€ said Srianto.

He said people could make use of the new route not only within the NTT province but also to reach other areas in Bali and Java.

Apart from expanding the flight routes, Merpati plans to increase flight frequencies on several existing routes.

Srianto said that for several years, Merpati had served flight routes from El Tari airport in Kupang, NTT, to a number of areas '€“ Alor, Bajawa, Ende, Manggarai, Maumere, Ruteng, Tambolaka and Waingapu '€“ that still had promising potential.

'€œWe have served Kupang-Alor flight route only once per day; but, with the current potential, we plan to increase its flight frequency,'€ he said.(ebf)
