he Joint Entrance Test for State Universities (SBMPTN) commenced on Tuesday and will end on Wednesday, with 590,000 applicants from across the country vying for 90,000 seats.

In Jakarta alone, some 44,165 high school graduates are taking the examination, which is being conducted by the local committee managed by officials from three state universities: the University of Indonesia (UI), the Jakarta State University (UNJ) and the Islamic State University (UIN) Syarief Hidayatullah. The tests are being held at 104 sites in Jakarta and Depok, West Java.

Jakarta Examination Committee chairman Akhmaloka said that students who passed the test could register at any state university in the country.

Jakarta Examination Committee Public Relations officer Farida Haryoko said on Tuesday that 22,755 students had registered for the social science (IPS) examination; 17,713 for natural science (IPA) and 3,697 for both.
