The government intends to import 45,000 cows to meet the demand for beef during Ramadhan and Idul Fitri.
"The government will import 15,000 cows before the end of June and 30,000 before the end of July," Trade Minister Gita Wirjawan said as quoted by kontan.co.id on Thursday.
Last year, the government slashed the head of cattle import quota by more than 30 percent and beef import quota by nearly 60 percent to promote the domestic beef industry.
But the policy resulted in a beef scarcity in the market late last year and surging prices.
