"We suspect these attacks are related to the shooting of a robbery suspect named Erika who was being sought by the Mura police," South Sumatra Police chief Insp. Gen. Saud Usman Nasution said in Palembang on Wednesday.
He added, "We are advising the public to stay calm."
According to Saud, South Sumatra police had mobilized two Mobile Brigade companies to secure the location.
He added the police had asked the Indonesian Army, as well as the Jambi and Bengkulu police Mobile Brigades to help them secure the area.
Previously, the Muara Rupit police headquarter had been burned by residents in the aftermath of a clash over whether Musi Rawas should become a new regency.
Four people reportedly died in that clash. (fan)
