he Commission for Missing Persons and Victims of Violence (Kontras) has urged the government to provide protection for the minority Shiite
community, which has been forced to flee its homes and live in refugee camps after a bloody conflict in Sampang, Madura, East Java.
Kontras said in a news release in Jakarta on Wednesday that the Shiite people had been moved from Sampang and forced to live in refugee camps in Sidoarjo, East Java, since June 20, 2013.
Currently at least 224 people from 64 families of the Shiite community, including children and senior citizens, are being accommodated at cheap apartment houses in Sidoarjo.
Kontras urged the government to provide decent food and education for the people especially for the children.
Kontras also asked the government to talk with the Shiite community leaders in order to find ways to restore the rights of the displaced people. (apt)
