he Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) said onFriday that it collected a piece of evidence that could be used againstIndonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) politician Izedrik Emir Moeis,in a bribery case surrounding the construction of a coal-fired power plant inTarahan, Lampung.
Prior to detaining Emir after he was questioned for the first time on Thursday, the antigraft body had questioned 27 witnesses, according to KPK commissioner Bambang Widjojanto.
'Some of them were key witnesses, who were questioned in overseas countries. The KPK believed that the result of the questioning could be used as a basis to enforce other legal proceedings against Emir,' he told reporters via text message.
Bambang was responding to Emir's lawyer, Yanuar P. Wasesa, who said that the KPK did not have a strong case, as none of the witnesses admitted that they knew Emir.
Bambang added that the KPK was focusing its investigation by zeroing in on the relationship between Emir and energy infrastructure company PT Alstom Indonesia, a subsidiary of French-based conglomerate Alstom, which won the tender for the power plant in 2004.
'The case is related to Alstom. So the KPK is focusing on that. If you follow the development of the case, some of the foreign nationals who were implicated in the case were charged in their own countries,' he said, referring to two Alstom executives who had been charged for allegedly bribing Emir to secure the contract of the Tarahan power plant.
