State-owned train operator PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) plans to revamp Tanah Abang station in Central Jakarta due to an increasing number of passengers
tate-owned train operator PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) plans to revamp Tanah Abang station in Central Jakarta due to an increasing number of passengers.
KAI spokesperson for the Greater Jakarta operation area, Sukendar Mulya, said in a press release on Tuesday that the station could not accommodate the amount of commuters that had increased from 22,000 people per day to 39,000 people per day since cheaper fares were imposed on July 1.
Sukendar said the renovation, hopefully carried out at the end of July, was essential as the waiting rooms in the station were too narrow for adequate passenger flow. "It is time to widen the platform and the waiting rooms so the passengers can be more comfortable," he said.
Sukendar said that during the renovation, local trains from the western part of Jakarta, for example those serving the Jakarta-Merak and Jakarta-Rangkas Bitung routes, would not stop at the Palmerah, Duri and Angke stations in West Jakarta, instead of at the Tanah Abang station.
