Police foil illegal immigrants smuggling attempt in Sukabumi

he SukabumiPolice have foiled an attempt to smuggle 17 Afghan nationalsin to Christmas Island, Australia, from Pelabuhan Ratu Port.

'€œThey in our custody before we move them to the immigration detainment center,'€ Sukabumi Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Asep Edi Suheri said on Wednesday as quoted by Antara news agency.

He said the police had found the immigrants thanks to information from local residents. He added these immigrants were hiding inside two trucks that departed from Cisarua.

'€We are currently questioning the two truck drivers about smuggling through Sukabumi waters,'€ he
said.

He said these immigrants planned to sail in Sukabumi waters because it was the nearest point to Christmas Island.

Earlier in June, the police also foiled an attempt, also in Sukabumi, to smuggle another group of undocumented immigrants from Afghanistan and Pakistan. (hrl/dic)
