The local Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) head Ramon Abdjul said the floods originated from the surrounding hills. The floods hit residential areas below the hill, carrying fallen tree logs and sweeping away a number of homes after torrential rain fell on Thursday afternoon at around 5 p.m. local time.
A resident was reportedly swept away by swift currents and suffered a fractured leg, while thousands of other residents were forced to evacuate to a number of government offices located in safer areas.
Gorontalo regency BPBD emergency section head Hasna Datau said the floods damaged 80 hectares of ready-to-harvest rice fields in Molowahu village, and 70 other hectares of farms in Pangadaa village in Dungaliyo district.
