T

he Alliance of Independent Journalists (AJI) along with the United Nations Childrens Fund (UNICEF) honored four reporters during a presentation ceremony for the Best Media Coverage Award on Children's Issues, in Jakarta on Monday.

The awardees are Muhammad Miftah Faridl from Harian Surya newspaper for the print/on-line category with his writing titled "My Son Won't Become A Terrorist"; a freelance photojournalist, Jefri Tarigan, for the photographic category with his photograph titled "Lovely Dilla"; Odit Praseno Hadi from Kompas TV for the television category with his work titled "The Children of the Sea"; and Novaeny Wulandari from KBR68H radio news for the radio category with her work titled "I Was Sold by My Mother".

AJI chairman Eko Maryadi said in a press release that he acknowledged that children's issues had yet to enter the mainstream of the mass media.

"It always less attractive compared to outcries over political, economic and terrorism issues, as well as infotainment," he said.

UNICEF chief representative Angela Kearney said the media, as one of the pillars of democracy, should play an important role in increasing the awareness of decision makers in families, society, and the government.

"We hope the media, as a major player in this society, can develop this potential and prioritize children, especially the vulnerable and those who are most overlooked, so that their views and opinions can be heard," she said. (fan)
