our patrolling East Jakarta Police personnel were wounded when they attempted to break up a fight between two groups of residents on Jl. Jatinegara Barat in Kampung Melayu, East Jakarta, at 3:30 a.m., on Wednesday.
'Three police personnel from the East Jakarta Police and one policeman from the Jatinegara sub-precinct Police were wounded during the altercation,' East Jakarta Police spokesman Comr. Didik Haryadi told The Jakarta Post on Wednesday, adding that one was stabbed with a sickle.
According to eyewitnesses, he said, two groups of youths crossed paths at the back of Jatinegara Market and began fighting.
'Soon, other residents, youths and adults, joined in,' he said.
He said the patrolling officers were outnumbered and could only disperse the crowd with tear gas.
Didik added that the East Jakarta Police would conduct speak to residents to find out the cause of the brawl and to prevent similar incidents in the future.
