ndonesian Red Cross (PMI) chairman Jusuf Kalla handed over 20,000 sheets of corrugated iron and clean drinking water to earthquake victims in Aceh on a visit to the quake-hit area in Central Aceh, Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam, on Monday.

'€œSince the first day [of the quake], the PMI has been on location for emergency response, but more importantly is the rehabilitation period because many humanitarian relief organizations have left the disaster-hit areas,'€ said Kalla on the sidelines of the aid delivery in Kute Panang, Central Aceh, as quoted by Antara news agency.

Nanggroe Aceh leader Tengku Malik Mahmud, Aceh Governor Zaini Abdullah, Central Aceh Regent Nasarudin and Bener Meriah Regent Ruslan Abdul Gani warmly welcomed Kalla'€™s visit.

According to Kalla, who is a former vice president, every disaster results not only in victims but also wisdom. '€œTake a lesson from what happened. We have to be aware of and familiar with natural disasters,'€ said Kalla.

A 6.2 magnitude earthquake hit Aceh on July 2, resulting in 42 deaths. Thirty-four people died in Central Aceh while eight died in Bener Meriah.

On July 17, the Aceh governor lifted the emergency status and declared a 25-day recovery period from July 17 to Aug.10. (ebf)
