ekasi traffic police recorded that the number of vehicles, especiallymotorcycles, passing through the city rose had risen seven times since thestart of the annual Idul Fitri exodus on Thursday.
'As many as 8,478 motorcycles have passed the roads from Thursday at 8 p.m. to Friday at 8 a.m. The number has risen seven times than the number on regular days,' Bekasi traffic police division chief Comr. Arsal Sahban said as quoted by Antara news agency on Saturday.
However, the number of Idul Fitri travelers using cars has yet to show a significant increase. He added that only 93 cars passed the area from Thursday to Friday.
Meanwhile, the heavy traffic made violations unavoidable. The police ticketed at least 205 violators from Friday night to early Saturday.
The public had been advised well before Idul Fitri to travel by public transportation instead of motorbikes for safety reasons.
The Transportation Ministry recorded 3,600 traffic accidents, mostly involving motorcycles, during last year's exodus, in which 639 people died. (hrl/dic)
